What Happens When
The Unstoppable Force
Hits The Immovable Object? |
 |
Answer: Nothing.
Work Is Not Done.
The Force Goes "Through" It And Nothing Is Changed Or Created.
Creativity is work. It requires a new mix of
forces and objects that give us comfort just as they are. When our creative forces are at
a high, no one can stop us. When they are at a low, we miss opportunities.
Alexander of Macedonia, Aristotle's greatest
pupil, had the ability to transform the "impossible" into the very means of his
success--through creativity, persistence, and remembering the goal:
Thousands Of Years Ago, Alexander's conquering mission took him to a remote part of the earth.
The people of the region believed their rightful king would make himself known by untying
the intricate knot bequeathed by King Gordius, and on display in the courtyard.
Unsuccessful hopefuls, from the privileged to the poor, came and went over the centuries.
Upon hearing the legend, Alexander demanded to be taken to the famous knot. He
"untied" it immediately--by slicing it in half with his sword.
Through effort and determination, Alexander combined the force
of his thought with the fixed ancient myth he fulfilled -- creating a new reality that
suited his ends. His army was a tool. He remembered his goal was local leadership, not
conflict.
Great because he had armies? Or did
Alexander have armies because he was great? By the choices we make, we choose to
tap or not tap into the same creative element that made Alexander great. We may not wish
to conquer, but we may wish to discover opportunities hidden from us by our biases or
habits of thought. Opportunity springs from action and creativity--qualities that come to
us from the inside, and over which we have some control. As tools, these are as available
today, in our time, as they were to Alexander, in his time. Alexander teaches us to
"Trust yourself first, consider the data, then act."
