The Real Estate Client What Happens When The Unstoppable ForceMeets The Immovable Object? AKA: Alexander & The Gordian Knot James Patton, CRS Nothing. It Goes Through It. Creativity brings together in new ways forces and objects already around us. This is true everyplace in the universe, from the farthest star to our homes in Honolulu. Where there is creativity, something has given. Where creative forces are low, opportunities are missed. Where they are high, nothing can stop us. Yet, when we are unstoppable, we continue cooperation and positive interaction in the pursuit of our ends -- thus, a secret of the unstoppable is revealed, and rarely is brute force effective. Flexibility and adaptation is life's astute way of keeping us alive, creative, and moving forward. Let's copy the best of life in the way we handle our real estate transactions. I cite the story of Alexander and the Gordian Knot as a model for problem solving. Alexander the Great of Macedonia, Aristotle's famous pupil, understood and applied the creative element like few in history. His ability to transform the "impossible" into the very means by which he succeeded is one of the beautiful lessons of myth and history. We can learn a lot from Alexander and apply much of his thinking in our real estate dealings -- in, for example, the search for success through creativity, persistence, focus on the goal -- and, as we see here, remembering the goal: Thousands of years ago, Alexander's conquering mission approached a remote, populated area of Asia. The region's people had a myth: 'On his deathbed, our ancient King Gordius revealed to our people that our next king would be known when he untied the huge knotted rope displayed in the central courtyard.' Over the centuries and from around the continent, the king's leaderless people saw countless hopefuls come and go after unsuccessfully venturing their luck. Alexander was told the legend. He set his army at ease and went straight to the courtyard. Sizing up the famous knot, Alexander "untied" it without hesitation -- by slicing it through with his sword. The local people immediately proclaimed Alexander their king. The rope as an immovable object was a fiction, of course. Anyone could have done what Alexander did. What made Alexander different -- and unstoppable? In remembering his side's goal and understanding the others side's story, Alexander's mind touched the ancient king's mind. In a sense, the old king was re-born in the event. There is no substitute for a focused mind with an open attitude, and the old king knew how to get another one for his people. The stage was set for the creative work and result others could not envision. I value this clear, winning approach to problem solving. Together, we too can cut through obstacles that stand between where we are and what we want.
