The World To You...Right In Honolulu! Part 2

Still In The South Pacific

"A Parliamentary Resolution"

& The Iranian
Hostage Crisis

James Negotiates His
Way Around The World

James Patton

Upon leaving Fiji Peace Corps after four years, the Solomon Islands was one of my first stops. Parliament had just gone into session at Guadalcanal, the Solomon's main island. Almost immediately upon disembarking the airplane at Honiara, I met -- while searching the town for a place to stay -- The Honorable Joseph Taega (representative of the island of Malaita in the east).

The Solomons are hundreds of populated islands dispersed over a vast expanse of sea. Their representatives were in town for a short time to conduct government affairs. Those from the outer islands were mostly staying at a government apartment complex right at the center of Honiara. Joseph befriended me and explained how his country had only recently gained independence. Though members of the British Commonwealth, they admired the Americans who "saved us in the War." Joseph asked me to stay with them so they could "learn more about America."

The American embassy and its staff had been seized and taken hostage in Iran just a few days earlier. It was world news, even to a traveler (carrying a short wave radio), but the situation was not actually known or understood by the local people, including politicians. Each night, I met with Members informally and, over betel nut or beer, discussed the hostage crisis in Iran and other issues of their interest. This is how I learned that the Solomon Islands had recently gained admission to the United Nations.

I had an idea and saw an opportunity. I asked the Members in our social group to use their new international voice to help America. I presented my friends with a plan which they accepted, as far as they were concerned. We had a consensus that I write a draft of an appropriately worded Resolution they would then submit to Parliament for discussion. In it, the Solomon Islands government would request the Ayatollah Khomeini, through the offices of the United Nations, to release the American hostages in exchange for a formal United Nations inquiry into Iranian grievances.

Joseph Taega presented the Resolution to Parliament for a discussion and vote. The Iranian Hostage Resolution of 1979 passed unanimously and went to the United Nations, making the Solomon Islands the first nation to formally request such a measure on behalf of the United States.

One client quipped that I entered real estate "through a back door and opened a front one." Comments as these come from my diverse background and my reputation for guaranteeing honest and fair treatment of all parties in a transaction.

I take this a step further, and promise that in professional affairs, my personal concerns are set aside. When I do something that surprises you in a pleasant way, you will know where I am coming from.
